HELP ME, I’M AFRAID OF THE DENTIST!

Table of Contents

If you are afraid of your dentist, you’re hardly alone; studies show that as many as twenty percent of the adult population in the United States has at least some degree of dental anxiety. It’s something we encounter frequently, at Southern York Smile Care in Shrewsbury PA.  How do we calm their fears, provide a comfortable dental environment, and provide them with the dental care they need? One answer is sedation dentistry, but we don’t go straight to that solution.

1) We carefully explain the findings of the initial dental examination and thoroughly outline any recommended care. The consultation also includes a discussion about pain control, including sedation. This allows our dentistry patients to make informed decisions about their oral health and necessary dental services.

2) Dental treatment never begins until you are numb. Keep in mind, however, that every patient reacts to numbing agents differently.

Speak up right away if you start to feel discomfort. We will pause treatment, give you an additional analgesic, and wait until it takes effect. At Southern York Smile Care, we never rush dental treatment.

3) We provide many in-office amenities at Southern York Smile Care which help our dental patients focus on something pleasant during dental treatment.

4) We offer sedation dentistry to those who need it. We have two levels:

  • Oral conscious sedation. This involves taking a sedative prior to treatment. You’ll need a ride home afterward.
  • General anesthesia. An licensed anesthesiologist ensures you will be completely asleep for whatever treatment you require. Someone will have to drive you home after this, too.

At Southern York Smile Care in Shrewsbury PA, we understand dental anxiety and will help you overcome it. We offer a full range of dental services. Schedule an appointment with us today.
