Some men and women who lose a tooth in the back of the mouth question whether to replace it. After all, it doesn’t show when you smile, and other teeth can take over the chewing. At the Southern York Smile Center, we’re here to tell you there is more than one reason to replace a back tooth (or any tooth) with a dental implant.
1. Adjacent teeth may start shifting.
If a tooth tips, moves, or rotates, it can impact the bite. Any unopposed teeth can also move, though they ten to move outward from the bone (over-eruption). Teeth that are displaced can become more vulnerable to gum disease, decay, or TMJ pain.
2. The underlying bone will eventually pull back.
Without the tooth root, the jaw bone recedes. This changes the contours of the face and gives it a sunk-in look due to a reduction in supporting bone. The vertical shortening advances and becomes more pronounced as you get older. Not only that, that empty space can make your jawbone weaker and more fragile.
3. There will be extra stress on the teeth that take over the chewing functions.
This can lead to excessive wear, fracture, or pain.
So what’s the bottom line? Dental implants are good not only for your appearance – and they are great for that – but for your health, since they aid in bone stimulation and growth. They are durable, too, and keep getting better as the technology improves.
