Dr. Steven Haywood is extremely accomplished in dental implant placement and is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Implantology is the art and science of artificiallyreplacing teeth with bone-integrated dental anchors. It isn’t always possible to save a tooth. The treatment plan in this situation may include an outpatient surgical procedure in which a dental implant is inserted into the patient’s bone to act as a substitute for the root of the tooth. In most cases, the dental implant procedure is a two-step process. Before adding an abutment to the implant, which then has a crown created and fixed to it, the implant must osseointegrate (meaning it must form a bond with the bone, increasing stability enough so that you can place chewing forces on it).
The timeline for a dental implant procedure varies from case to case. Factors like the patient’s oral and overall health, how quickly they heal, and more all play a role in determining how long the wait will be between the dental implant procedure and the final restoration. Bone or tissue augmentation are sometimes necessary as well. In the absence of a tooth, the surrounding bone may begin to atrophy due to lack of stimulation, similar to the way muscles atrophy around a broken leg in a cast.
Dental implants are a specialty of Dr. Haywood and his team. He has successfully placed thousands of implants. At your consultation, Dr. Haywood will explain the dental implant procedure steps, which again will vary from patient to patient.
Benefits of Dental Implants
These days, most implants are titanium screw-like anchors with a textured surface — characteristics that help to increase osseointegration of the implant. We usually only treat patients with a local anesthetic, but other forms of sedation are also available for your comfort. Implants come in many sizes, and sometimes multiple implants may be placed. Dr. Haywood will take a CT scan of the patient and the treatment plan is created using digital technology. Thanks to surgical planning software, doctors are able to map out the locations the implants need to be placed in advance of the actual surgery. Surgical guides also enable us to precisely position an implant even in minimal bone, all in a procedure that is quicker and more accurate.
A gingival graft may sometimes be necessary in addition to bone reconstruction. Healthy and strong gingiva (the solid type of gum tissue that surrounds a healthy tooth) contributes to the stability and success of the implant. This step will come after a tooth extraction if the damaged or decayed tooth is still in place. In the planning stage, Dr. Haywood will decide whether an immediate, delayed, or late placement is warranted after extraction. Dental implant procedures typically involve two to three visits over a period of up to four months. Patients who have received successful implant placements know that this process is a welcome alternative to bridgework or dentures. 98% of dental implants are successful, though they are not usually recommended for smokers because that success rate drops considerably.
When Dr. Haywood is planning an implant case, functionality and aesthetics are both very important considerations. Seeing a patient regain their beautiful smile is only half of the goal; when they are able to eat their favorite foods again, they also regain their oral and overall health and access to good nutrition. By using a holistic approach to dentistry, Dr. Haywood sees the entire picture. The dental implant procedure might vary from patient to patient but the compassion and preparation that Dr. Haywood and his staff put into each treatment plan does not. That’s how we create an atmosphere of health and success for our patients. At Southern York Smile Care in Shrewsbury, PA, we will guide our patients through the dental implant procedure and process with care and understanding of the patient’s goals, health, and objectives.
The Dental Implant Process
The entire implant process is completed here, at our Shrewsbury office, in a few easy steps:
At your initial consultation, Dr. Haywood will thoroughly examine your jaw and oral health, and discuss your treatment goals to assess your implant candidacy. If you’re a candidate for implants, we can start right away.
Dr. Haywood will surgically attach the titanium implant fixture to your jaw. This will act as the tooth’s root to hold the implant in place and keep your jawbone strong.
Through a process called osseointegration, the fixture will become a secure and sturdy part of your jaw over the next few months. This creates a strong foundation for your new prosthetic tooth.
Once the area has healed, you’ll return to our office so Dr. Haywood can surgically place the abutment piece to connect the fixture to the restoration.
From there, we’ll attach your custom-made, beautiful porcelain crown to the top of the abutment to complete your smile. The crown is the only part of the implant anyone will see, and it’s made to look completely natural.
In some cases, you may require a supplemental procedure, like a gum graft or sinus lift, to prepare for successful dental implant placement. This will be determined during your initial consultation with Dr. Haywood as he assesses your oral health.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do dental implants last?
With the right care, dental implants are made to last a lifetime. This means maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing at least twice a day, flossing regularly, and rinsing between meals. Dr. Haywood recommends using a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive toothpaste to prevent scratching your restoration.
It’s also important to schedule routine check-ups and professional cleanings with Dr. Haywood every six months, or twice a year. This allows us to help maintain healthy teeth and gums, ensuring your implant lasts as long as possible.
How do you take care of your dental implants after the procedure?
In the months following surgery, you’ll need to be careful around the surgical site. Be careful not to swish liquids around in your mouth or to spit because this can dislodge your fixture before it’s secure. When your implant is complete and secure, you won’t have to worry about it. All you have to do to care for your implant is to brush and floss your teeth, then visit Dr. Haywood every six months for a regular check-up.
Are dental implants safe?
Yes, our natural-looking, durable dental implants are completely safe. In fact, they’re the only tooth replacement solution that stimulates healthy jawbone growth for optimal oral health. Dental implants are a great way to replace any number of damaged or missing teeth due to decay, disease, or dental trauma. From restoring your ability to chew, to allowing you to speak clearly, dental implants offer patients a number of benefits.
Does insurance cover my dental implants procedure?
Most dental insurance plans will cover a portion of the cost of dental implant treatment, but all plans vary. We recommend checking with your dental insurance provider to find out the details of your plan prior to your consultation. If you’d like, a member of our staff can contact them for you to ensure you receive the maximum benefits possible.
What do I do in the event of a complication with my dental implants?
If you’re experiencing any difficulty with your dental implants, contact our office immediately by calling (717) 235-3871 or filling out a contact form.
