The Porcelain Veneers Process

The entire porcelain veneers can be completed in two short appointments. The appointments will consist of the following:

Your first appointment – During this first visit, we’ll take impressions of your teeth to ensure your veneers look and feel perfect. These images will then be sent to a dental laboratory where your veneers will be customized, typically taking around two to four weeks. This appointment is also a great time to ask Dr. Haywood any questions you may have.
Your second appointment – Once your custom veneers are ready, you’ll return to our Shrewsbury office to have them placed. Dr. Haywood will safely remove a portion of your tooth enamel to make room for the veneer. Once you’re satisfied with the shape and color, we’ll use a bonding agent to adhere the veneers to your teeth. After this is complete, your new, flawless smile is ready to show off.

How much of the tooth is filed down during the procedure?

To apply veneers, a very small amount of the original tooth enamel is removed, usually less than a millimeter. This is essential as it creates room for the veneer to fit on the tooth and most accurately restore a tooth’s natural appearance without being too bulky.

However, when closing gaps or treating teeth that need to be larger, oftentimes minimal or no preparation is necessary. We can use porcelain that’s extremely thin for no-prep veneers.

Caring for Your Veneers

While veneers aren’t a permanent solution, if cared for properly they can last up to 15 years or more. To improve the lifespan of your veneers, you’ll want to follow a few guidelines:

Refrain from tooth-staining foods and beverages such as red wine, berries, and coffee
Avoid eating hard foods such as ice, candy, popcorn, and nuts
Wear a mouthguard at night to prevent teeth grinding, or bruxism
Brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and rinse between meals

Do veneers ruin your teeth?

No. While a small amount of enamel is removed, the amount is minuscule. This doesn’t threaten the health of your teeth as long as you’re taking proper care of your oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth every day keeps both your natural teeth healthy and your veneers looking as good as new.
